Naturally
made.
For you.

Your companion for essences and extracts from Hamburg, Germany.

Tailor-made.
Naturally. For you.

Nutramaxx® is your companion in product development when you are looking for plant extracts, distillates or essences for your products. We make food more natural. We produce tailor-made extracts in consultation with you and also support you in further product development when it comes to topics such as product safety and declaration issues. In doing so, we use our worldwide network for raw material procurement, which we have been steadily expanding since 2005, and are thus able to serve even unusual customer requests.

Vanilla is of particular importance to us. We develop extracts from vanilla beans from various regions such as Madagascar, Uganda, Tahiti or Mexico. Our focus and expertise in this area have also been reflected in our new logo.

Nutramaxx®. Naturally made. For you.

Extracts are for us as easy as A(pple) — B(anana) — C(itrus).

From the initial idea
to market readiness:

1 How it all begins
/> /> /> /> /> /> /> /> /> />
  • It all starts with your idea and request for a particular product or taste.
  • With counter-questions we clarify for which application the product is and which qualitative specifications it must fulfill. BIO, Naturland or Fairtrade certified? Halal, kosher or baby food? If we have a suitable product in our range by default, we will send you a sample immediately.
  • A suitable product for your wish does not yet exist? No problem, we at Nutramaxx love innovation and the challenge—the journey begins with step number 2 ...
2 Selection of suitable raw material suppliers
  • We create a supplier selection for the suitable raw material with which we can later create an individual sample for your request and clarify the following questions:
  • Do we have all documents and certificates for the raw material? And: Is the raw material available or could there be bottlenecks?
  • We then order a raw material sample from a suitable supplier.
3 Sample Production & Analysis
  • The basis for your individual sample is produced in a rotary evaporator or as an extract or macerate.
  • The process is continuously documented and, among other things, the specifications for the sample are recorded.
  • After the basic sample arrives, an extraction or distillation is performed and your individual customer sample is developed.
  • We perform detailed analyses with information on allergens, pesticides, chemical-physical parameters etc.
  • Finally, we create the final specification of your sample.
4 Your lab tests, our support
  • We will send you your individual sample and you can now start your own tests in the lab.
  • But also at this point we do not leave you alone:
  • If you wish, we will be happy to assist you in creating the recipe or the list of ingredients.
  • We can also develop ready-to-consume samples for you.
  • We are also there for you if you have any legal questions about topics such as sales descriptions or ingredient lists.
5 Final formulation & market readiness
  • The customer sample appeals to you and the end customer product is to be launched?! Wonderful!
  • In this case, we create our final recipe and a process instruction, secure the raw materials in coordination with you and produce a defined quantity with the help of our manufacturing partners so that you can start a pilot production on your plant.
  • In addition, we create your customer-specific specification including documentation and commission further analyses.
6 Delivery
  • The time has come: your individual, tailor-made product is produced and delivered!

As a company, we are aware of our responsibility to keep pace with social and sustainable standards.

The world we live in is changing, and climate change is making itself increasingly felt. We are contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way of working by making changes in our organization bit by bit and paying attention to the careful use of resources.

But our attention is not only focused on our daily work processes. For years, we have been actively supporting the association Help Mada e.V. whose mission is to improve the health and education systems in Madagascar. It is close to our heart to make our contribution at this point.

The non-profit association was founded in 2020 and has set itself the goal of working with local partners to support and implement the construction of health clinics and schools in Madagascar. We at Nutramaxx believe that the development of the Madagascan infrastructure offers the local people even more quality of life and development opportunities, which are to be considered sustainable and long-term.

Quiz question: How long does it take to harvest a vanilla bean?

Quiz question: How long does it take to harvest a vanilla bean?

The answer to that is not that simple. It is clear that the cultivation and harvesting process takes a lot of time and effort. As we found out on our last trip to Madagascar on the trail of Bourbon #Vanilla, it takes sensitivity, patience and lots of hard-working hands. The vanilla plant initially needs about three years until it forms flowers. That's when it gets exciting: Only once a year does it open its flowers for a few hours and hand pollination can take place. When the pods are formed a few months after pollination, they can be picked. After a bath in hot water, drying processes follow several weeks of fermentation. In the morning the pods are laid out in the sun to dry and in the evening stored to “sweat”. The pods are then dried in storage rooms for two to three months. Only then is it sorted into different quality levels, depending on the vanilin content and moisture level. Depending on many factors, the quiz question cannot be answered unequivocally. What is certain is that there is a lot of manual work and effort behind the popular spice. Did you expect that? We, nutramaxx, buy our bourbon vanilla beans directly from the processor, who in turn buys the beans from the vanilla farmers at fair prices. We extract the pods and supply them to food manufacturers from a wide variety of sectors.

We are used to special tastes, but we have rarely encountered such a special taste. We have been tinkering in our laboratory and today we present our Ashwagandha extract, which can be described as bitter and sweet, but also reminiscent of earthy, woody, herbal and slightly hay aromas. For the new flavor combination, we extracted whole, dried Ashwagandha roots in a solid-liquid extraction to get as many flavors as possible. The liquid was then carefully filtered before we gently concentrated the extract into a viscous extract in our vacuum rotary evaporator. Ashwagandha belongs to the nightshade family and is also known under the names sleeping berry, winter cherry or Indian ginseng. It is considered a medicinal plant in Ayurvedic medicine and means something like "smell of the horse". But don't worry: the grassy olfactory notes of the root dissipate during the production of our extract in the laboratory. When life gives you lemons...

When life gives you lemons...

...extract them! There is a real lemon trend this summer, ranging from aesthetic table decorations in restaurants to irreplaceable ingredients in refreshing drinks and food. The sour but simple ingredient tastes best when left in its natural state. Our #BIO lemons and conventional lemon extracts in different flavor profiles are perfect for turning summer product ideas into reality. We do bitter! You too?

We do bitter! You too?

Fresh from our development lab, our #BIO angostura bark extract. Did you know that the name was derived from the city "Angostura", today Ciudad Bolivar, a city in Venezuela. "Angosturari bark" are the dried bark pieces with a strong, spicy, bitter taste of the angostura tree Cusparia trifoliata Engl. (Rubiaeae family) that grows wild in South America, especially on the banks of the Orinoco in Venezuela. The bark, mainly used for so-called Angostura bitters, contains aroma (1.5% essential oil with 14% calipol) and bitter substances (especially angosturine) and is mainly imported by the essence and spirits industry. We have developed an organic angosturari bark extract from this raw material, which is excellent for use in drinks to give them a bitter note. Our Nutramaxx family has grown!

Our Nutramaxx family has grown!

Our youngest family member is our vacuum rotary evaporator from Heidolph Instruments GmbH & Co. KG, which helps us to distill and extract new natural raw materials. The rotation and heating of the flask in the heating bath produces steam that flows through the condenser. Condensation takes place and liquid enters the receiving flask. At the same time, the boiling temperature is reduced by applying a vacuum, which means that evaporation can take place at lower temperatures. This process is very helpful, especially with temperature-sensitive raw materials, as it is particularly gentle on the aroma. We already have a few attempts behind us. Clear favourite: our angostura bark extract, which adds a bitter note to drinks.

BioFach 2022. Finally personal exchange again!

BioFach 2022. Finally personal exchange again!

The BioFach trade fair in Nuremberg could take place again this year. As a Naturland sign partner, we didn't have a stand this year, but we were able to concentrate fully on the many exciting exhibitors. We were particularly inspired by the many start-ups with their exciting ideas. Our key takeaway: The trade fair once again made it clear how important personal contact is and what exciting developments there are in the food sector. We are already looking forward to next year!

Vanilla harvest in Madagascar

Vanilla harvest in Madagascar

The years 2021 and 2022 were particularly important for the vanilla harvest in Madagascar. Exports rose rapidly and reached a peak not reached in the last 20 years. Instead of the usual 1600-2000 tons per year, 3187 tons were achieved. In 2021, the Malagasy government set a minimum export price of 250 USD/kg, which will apply until 2023. To protect local workers, the minimum price a vanilla farmer receives for a kilo of green vanilla beans is 70,000 Ariary, which is about $17. The vanilla harvest in Madagascar is currently satisfactory with a vanillin content of 1.6-2%; the quality of the harvest will not change for the time being. However, the Malagasy currency is still very weak and the development of the USD and EUR will lead to further devaluation.

In the photo, it is still standing inconspicuously and securely packed in front of the foodlab, Hamburg's first address for innovative creatives in the culinary and food sector. But soon its first working day will begin: with a state-of-the-art rotary evaporator from the company Heidolph, we at Nutramaxx are taking our flavor management to the next level for you. Intuitively and gently we can extract, intensify and compose flavors. Your individual wishes for special and exclusive flavors are (almost) unlimited. Look forward to further insights!
